Welcome to The Community Day School

Dear Parent,

Thank you for visiting our site.  It’s my pleasure to introduce myself to you as the Principal and owner of The Community Day School.  My name is Michael Dobbs and I live in Nashville with my wife, Anne, and our four children: Andrew (25), Chatham (22), Hudson (20), and Margo (16).  Anne and I met during our senior year at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where I attended on a full athletic scholarship. I grew up swimming competitively and although I have many great memories, participating in the 1988 Olympic Trials was one of my most treasured experiences.  After graduation, we moved to Nashville where I worked at Vanderbilt University teaching swimming to young children.

While running a payroll services company in Nashville in 2002, I began sensing an urge to instruct and coach children. I began by teaching a teenage Sunday school class at my church and transitioned into teaching school-age children. That’s when I realized I was really good at listening to young children and sensing their needs. It occurred to me that I could use my swimming background and talents to help children in a greater way. After coaching a USS swim team for one year, I volunteered and headed up the middle and high school swim teams for The Ensworth School in Nashville. Two years later, I was asked to take on these same responsibilities for Montgomery Bell Academy. With my oldest son attending there, it made perfect sense. In the five years that I served as head high school swim coach, the team won five division titles, five regional titles, and two Tennessee State titles.

Teaching, coaching, and offering resource and support services to families are natural ways for me to demonstrate my passion. Owning and running a high-quality preschool provides the perfect opportunity for me to combine my talents with my work.

By being a parent as well as researching and learning from others who specialize in the field of child development, I have come to recognize how the first five years of a child’s life are a critical time in their social and personal development. These years form the foundation that shapes a child’s future, health, happiness, growth, development, and learning potential at school. These are also the years that impact how children function in their family, community, and life in general. To be part of this process and help children and families in this endeavor is my desire.

I believe that each and every child has the potential to bring something special to the world.  As parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors, we can partner to help children find their passions and develop to their full potential. When children discover who they are and know that they possess great potential and beauty, they can begin to express their unique spirit and perspective. Therefore, the mission of The Community Day School is to provide supportive and effective educational and parenting resources to families, caretakers, and teachers within our community; to create a loving environment aimed at bolstering the greatness in each person.

Our vision for the school includes an expanded holistic outreach to older children and families: a program which helps parents heal their own lives and flourish in their supportive role, and embodies personal on-premises interaction to help the staff feel supported as they provide love and nurture to each child.

Thank you for your interest in The Community Day School.  It would be our pleasure to provide you with an individual tour at a time most convenient for you.  We hope you will join us in making The Community Day School the best place for children, parents, teachers, and staff to grow and thrive as valued individuals making a positive difference in our community.

Warmest regards,
Michael J. Dobbs
